PreK at UTCDC

Curriculum & Learning Approach

Our Pre-K curriculum is grounded in developmentally appropriate practice and designed to support the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally. Learning is driven by children’s curiosity and interests, with teachers intentionally planning experiences that build critical thinking, language, and problem-solving skills through play and inquiry.

Teachers observe children closely, document their learning, and use those observations to design meaningful projects and learning invitations. Literacy, math, science, and social studies concepts are embedded throughout the day in hands-on, meaningful ways rather than taught in isolation. Children are encouraged to ask questions, test ideas, collaborate with peers, and reflect on their learning.

Play-Based, Inquiry-Driven Learning

Play is the foundation of learning in our Pre-K classrooms. Through purposeful play, children build early literacy and math skills, strengthen executive functioning, and practice social-emotional skills such as cooperation, self-regulation, and persistence.

Learning centers are thoughtfully designed to invite exploration, creativity, and problem-solving. Teachers facilitate play by extending children’s thinking with open-ended questions, new materials, and gentle guidance—helping children deepen their understanding while maintaining joy and engagement.

Social-Emotional Learning & Classroom Community

Strong relationships are at the heart of our Pre-K program. Teachers prioritize creating a classroom environment where children feel safe, respected, and valued. Daily routines, group meetings, and collaborative activities support children in developing empathy, independence, and confidence.

Rather than focusing solely on behavior management, teachers coach children through challenges by teaching skills such as identifying emotions, communicating needs, and resolving conflicts. This approach supports children in becoming thoughtful, capable members of a learning community.

Assessment & Individualized Support

Assessment in our Pre-K program is ongoing and observation-based. Teachers use authentic assessment tools, classroom documentation, and regular observations to understand each child’s strengths, growth, and areas for support.

Assessment is used to inform instruction—not to label or compare children. Teachers partner with families to share insights, celebrate progress, and collaboratively support each child’s development. This responsive approach ensures learning experiences are tailored to meet children where they are and support continued growth.

Preparing Children for Kindergarten

Kindergarten readiness in our Pre-K program goes beyond academic skills. We focus on building independence, confidence, and a love of learning—along with early literacy and math foundations.

Children practice following routines, problem-solving with peers, communicating ideas, and persisting through challenges. By the time they leave Pre-K, children are prepared not only for the structure of kindergarten, but for the social and emotional demands of a school setting.

Full-Day, Year-Round Care

UTCDC’s Pre-K program is offered as a full-day, year-round program designed to meet the needs of working families. While learning experiences align with kindergarten readiness goals, children benefit from the continuity of care, consistent relationships, and predictable routines that come with a full-day schedule.

In addition to the core Pre-K learning experiences, children participate in extended-day activities, outdoor play, rest time, and enrichment opportunities that support the whole child. Year-round programming helps minimize transitions, supports social-emotional stability, and allows children to build strong, lasting relationships with teachers and peers.

Family Partnership & Engagement

Families are essential partners in our Pre-K program. We believe strong relationships between families and teachers support children’s success and create a more connected, responsive learning environment.

Teachers communicate regularly with families through ongoing updates, classroom documentation, and shared reflections on children’s growth and learning. Families are invited to participate in classroom events, conferences, and school-wide activities, and are encouraged to share insights, questions, and goals throughout the year.

As children prepare for kindergarten, teachers work closely with families to support smooth transitions, provide guidance, and celebrate milestones. This partnership-centered approach ensures families feel informed, supported, and connected to their child’s learning journey.

Pre-K Funding Options

UTCDC participates in select Pre-K funding opportunities that may be available to eligible families, including Education Savings Accounts (ESA) and Pre-K Partnership programs. These options are designed to support access to high-quality early learning while maintaining the integrity of our full-day Pre-K program.

Funding programs typically cover the public school day and year only; extended care, after-care, school breaks, and summer care are not included and are billed separately. Eligibility requirements, coverage, and availability vary by program.

Families are encouraged to review our Pre-K Funding Information Sheet for detailed guidance on eligibility, coverage, and next steps.
