Favorite Children’s Book: Bodies are Cool by Tyler Feder

Becca was born and raised in Austin, TX, and has lived here for the majority of their life, aside from seven years living in Israel, where they finished high school and studied at Tel Aviv University for one year. After returning to Austin and finding their way into the field of early childhood education, they fell in love with working with infants, young children, and their families. Becca went back to school, starting at ACC and eventually receiving a BA in Early Childhood Education from American Jewish University in August 2022.

Becca has been working in education for 15 years, with six years of experience as an Assistant Director at another local early childhood program. Most recently, they were a Kindergarten teacher at a small local private school. After a year in the Elementary world, Becca has felt called to return to early childhood, and is excited to begin their journey at UT CDC!

Becca’s educational philosophy is deeply inspired by the Reggio-Emilia approach to education, with an emphasis on respecting children as whole beings, who are competent and capable of leading their own educational journeys from infancy. Through observation and documentation of students’ developmental needs and abilities, as well as their individual and collective interests, Becca works with co-educators and families to co-construct emergent curriculum that engages children in meaningful and exciting educational experiences. With the backdrop of a calm, neutral classroom environment, they weave a colorful tapestry of collective learning and discovery with their students, using loose parts, nature and sensory exploration, art, music, storytelling, and open-ended provocations and materials. Becca believes that fostering strong, trusting relationships with students and their families is paramount to co-creating a successful learning community, in which everyone feels included, respected, and celebrated for who they are.

In her free time, Becca enjoys spending time with her wife and their many dogs, writing, making art, playing ukulele, and watching British mystery shows.
